
But look, Doc Eggfan and co of Sonic Retro fame have changed all that. It's Sonic 2 as you remember it running on Master System hardware... sort of.
Truth is it's merely a graphical and layout hack of the Master System version, and as it only covers Emerald Hill Zone, don't go expecting a fantastic replacement. It's very much a mish-mash of objects already found in the game, which means Coconuts can manipulate time and space and there's a distinct lack of working loops.

It might not have the spindash move or Tails, but it still acts as a pretty big milestone. The Master System Sonic games are unexplored territory for hackers, and supposedly technical tweaks are on their way, along with the second zone, Chemical Plant. It's taken a while for this to see a public release so go travel to Sonic Retro and enjoy it.
